Would you rather be known or admired?
Admiration comes with a lot of perks and it’s only natural that we focus on our accomplishments, finances, milestones in life. Especially when we are young.
But what about our connection with others, our friendships?
Close friendships are the key to happiness -- and they are a contributor to good health -- but they rarely make it onto our list of stated goals.
Lately, I have made deepening my friendships a priority.
I’ve gone back to the vault to reconnect with sincere people whom God has put in my path -- from high school days to my new community to my career as an entrepreneur -- and it has had a major impact on my outlook.
For example, this week I summitted 10,420’, a majestic hike near in Utah with two friends from two totally different chapters of life, David Hartshorne (a melanoma survivor) and Mike Schmidt who runs The Nerdery in Minnesota.
You learn a lot about each other when you spend 4 hours at high altitude, especially when you are huddling in the trees at the end of the hike, trying to avoid a giant Moose.
The main takeaway? More friendships are out there for all of us, but they must be cultivated. And when it comes to close friendships, it’s all about quality not quantity.
The more vulnerable you can be with those people, the more you are seen and understood yourself.
Thanks for supporting my walk for melanoma -- I am close to crossing the 700-mile mark and I could not have done it without the encouragement of so many good friends like you.
